better value: 8900 for $99 or 9700 for $199?
Hey, I'm new here! I was lurking the forum as I think it's time for me to upgrade my crappy phone. I'm on T-mobile and an upgrade for an 8900 is 100 bucks vs 200 bucks for the 9700. I'm obviously going to assume bias due to this being the 8900 board, but which do you think is best? Note: I'm in college and will mainly be using my future blackberry in Tallahassee, Florida, which doesn't have 3G, only edge

I'd go with the 9700. For an extra $100 you get a trackpad, 3G, and official OS 5.0 out the box. Also the increased processor speed is a great bonus too.

If you don't need 3G, I wouldn't really see any point paying another 100 dollars for the 9700! 3G is the main thing any user would upgrade to the 9700. The trackball / trackpad issue is more due to personal preference. Go into a shop and play with both! I wouldn't bother getting the 9700 if you wont be able to use 3G, especially if your a student, spend the money on clothes and booze!

Get the 9700.
I bet it won't be too long before you get 3G there. The 9700 is solid with a nice keyboard and more memory. Def worth the extra money.
Oh, and I'm a college student too. Trust me, having a nice BB in school is awesome. Don't waste your money on booze and clothes....totally not worth it. Get the 9700

The 8900 has better build quality IMO.

The 8900 is a GREAT device!
I love my 8900, I really do!
But, if I wouldn´t have a Blackberry, I (personally)´d take the 9700!
The trackpad is great!
You will never have a problem with a dirty or sticky trackball!
It also has 3G - ok, in Florida you won´t be able to use it...
But it´s better to have a 3G phone and no 3G carrier, than the other way...
But it depents on YOU, if you want to pay 100bucks more "only" for a trackpad!
You are a student and a little bird told me d*pe and beer is really expensive in Florida...
The 9700 is a 8900 with trackpad and 3G.
You won`t be wrong with both devices!!!Last edited by Slash82; 12-15-2009 at 05:55 PM.

I really think its a personal preference, 9700 has trackpad 3g,faster processor, same on board memory I think and same camera, basically the 9700 is a 8900 with a faster processor,3g,and a trackpad. I've never had a problem with my trackball but some have,so I would go into the store and play aroud with both, they are also pretty much the same size.

Get the 9700. Better processor, trackpad, 3g, and official 5.0 OS. The 8900 is offered for free now on tmobile correct me if I'm wrong.
Oh man, if I had a data plan on my last semester in college I wouldve never paid attention in class. Getting a BB is either a good thing or a bad thing haha.
Don't listen to the posters. Spend the money on booze, strippers, and cocaine.

8900 is a little sluggish IMHO; it becomes noticeable with browser, maps, and startup of many installed apps. I am on 4.6, maybe 5.0 is faster. Edge is brutally slow, and makes browsing only useful if you need to look something up on the go. 3G is fast enough to surf for pleasure or boredom. Using wifi is slightly faster, but not much, I assume this is because once on wifi, the slow browser/cpu become the bottleneck.
After all those gripes, I still love my 8900. More than enough for PIM. I like the keyboard, and is a great phone. In over a year, my trackball has never had to be cleaned... except that one time I got sand in it during florida trip... if you spend time at beach 9700 is a no-brainer. If you just need messaging, and PIM 8900 will be fine.

If you play with both, you're probably gonna walk away with the 9700. They had a Bell one set up at a Future Shop I was at so I was playing with it and comparing it to my 8900. I have to say it is a much nicer, more solid feeling phone but I can't justify upgrading this early in my contract.
I thought I loved my curve keyboard but i fell in love with the 9700 keys. Something about the quiet, softer Bold series keyboards is nicer to me. I feel like i'm always too loud when I'm typing on my 8900 and it just looks cheaper and more plasticky.
As for the trackpad, I found that it was harder to navigate in the browser window. With the trackball you can scroll in a circle easily, but with the trackpad it seemed that it only wanted to go in a straight line, no smooth maneuverable cursor action.
