BB Curve 8900 - Menu Key error

I have a BB Curve 8900 where instead of the Menu Key dialogue scroll down display popping up - when you press it once or twice, instead the Switch Applications dialogue screen display with the Default BB Icons displays. I have to repeatedly keep escaping and pushing the Menu key to finally get the Menu Key dialogue scroll down display to pop up so as to scroll down and exit the program. No keys seem to work as an exit the Application from within the Switch Applications ICONS dosplay. Is this a convienence key programming issue or hardware problem....driving my spouse nuts.
