I would turn your Data Services option to Off while roaming...Go to Connections Mobile Network Options.

Make sure MMS roaming is set to home only and manual for abroad. Less excessive data charges when you're abroad.

First is your phone gsm or cdma ie does it have a sim card. If not with verizon you have to enable international dialing.
Second disable data services or you will be charged for every minute that your phone is connected - which in the case of a blackberry is constantly.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you can always use UMA since you are with T-mobile, as long as the WiFi network you are connected to is configured correctly. Sometimes this is out of your control (like in a hotel) and you just have to try it out to see if it will work. When you do try UMA, since you will be roaming, I highly suggest that you turn off the mobile network completely first. The reason for this is because you need to enable the data services option for your data to transfer over UMA but if you leave the mobile network on at the same time, then you will incur the International Roaming charges. If you have no idea what I am talking about then I highly suggest that you search the forums on the UMA topic as this has been covered many many times. You can also check my signature for WiFi and UMA Guide links.

Adding to Ari's post, I believe that if you add UMA calling to your plan, 9.95 a month, you will be able to make UMA calls over a wifi connection to the US without incurring additional charges. Check with Customer Service to be sure.

Always check with CS, there are some conditions that must be met for the calls to be free, but I'm not sure what they are. Thanks for the heads up Clint.

I am going on a road trip to Canada this friday. My wife and I still wanted to receive email because we both have unlimited. So I called tmobile and the CS agent prorated me the international data plan for one week. So my wife and I get unlimited emails internationally starting June 27th and ending on July 4th, for only $5 per phone. I got a text message confirming this plan would take effect and then end on those dates.

However, she said I would get charged if I accessed the internet, or opened up any attachments. I would get charged for any other data transfers that weren't email text.

She also changed my account so I could make calls while in Canada tho it will still like 90 cents per minute.
