Default 3G SIM, but showing GPRS

I'm using a 8900 (v4.6.1.310) on Orange's pay-as-you-go blackberry internet tariff. For several months I've been using it with an oldish SIM which I assumed was not 3G because the phone always showed "GPRS" and was pretty slow when away from my home WiFi network.

So I dropped into an Orange shop today and they gave me a free 3G SIM and transferred the phone number etc over to the new SIM. They said the old one would still work for a few hours, but when it stopped I should swap to the new SIM.

The sales assistant reinserted the old SIM and I left the shop. After about 10 mins it had booted up and showed "SIM not provisioned:2" so I guessed that it had already been switched off.

I inserted the new SIM and it seems to be working OK, but the screen still shows GPRS instead of 3G. I've switched it on and off a couple of times but it still shows GPRS.

The new SIM has "3G" printed on it, so I assume it really is 3G capable.

I went into Options>Mobile Network but there doesn't seem to be anything to specifically enable 3G, just

Data Services: On
Mobile Network: Orange
Network Selection Mode: Automatic

Any suggestions what might be wrong?

The 8900 is not a 3G phone so the fastest speeds you will get are EDGE/GPRS.

Thanks James. That'd explain it then.

A phone upgrade moves a little closer.
