Default Wi-Fi on Curve 8520

I bought a BlackBerry curve just over 2 years ago when I retired. I think I was still in work mode at the time and set email up on Enterprise Server, although - of course - I no longer have an enterprise to connect to. I'm now heading off to Australia and the far east and want to turn off data roaming and check email over wi-fi when I'm in a hot spot. I've got wi-fi turned on to work with my home wireless router, but when I turn off data roaming I have no connection to BlackBerry infrastructure.

Can anyone tell me how to get email off Enterprise Server (I think that's the root cause of the wi-fi problem); or, alternatively, tell me how to work around the wi-fi problem?

Thank you, kind person, in advance!
