SMS messaging length!!!!please help
Can anyone help me with figuring out how I can send an SMS message that is longer than 160 letters or characters? I've been sending SMS messages and after 160 characters, it won't allow me to write anymore. Its gets really annoying trying to send a long message and having to shorten it up because I can't fit anymore letters on. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it.

Is this the only way to write more than 160 letters?

The SMS standard was originally 160 characters. That's why the native software has that limit. Some phones and carriers allow longer text messages, some don't. Beyond160 is the solution that's often recommended. If there's another 3rd party solution, I'm unaware of it.

There isn't a way without buying an app to increase the character length. That's why it's called SHORT messaging. I have to just type until I reach 160 characters, then send, then start another new message. Lucky for me, I have unlimited texts as do the people I tend to get lengthy with.
Even with the app, it may or may not come through as one message on the receiver's end. Friend of mine has an app similar to that and his texts always come through as multiple messages on my end even though he can type more than 160 characters on his end.God save us all. Go Sharks.

Mine only allows MMS if I'm sending a file such as a picture. That's why that's called multi-media messaging. On my old Nextel 8350i, MMS was the *only* texting option. On my 8530 on the Sprint side, I can either MMS or SMS, but MMS will *only* work if I have a picture or something attached.

The person receiving also has to support MMS, which is the main problem, you don't know if their service does or not.

Another way you can go beyond 160 is by making the message a MMS. I use to do this all the time when I had a Samsung Delve and significant other had a Motorola. Motorola's (at least the RAZR/Vegas) automatically turn the message into a MMS when it reaches greater than 160. However you'll still have a limit on MMS, but much greater than 160.
Now... Some phones are actually smart enough will let you type unlimited amount of characters, but will split them into separate text messages. I remember with some of my friends I would recieve: Text 1 of 3; Text 2 of 3; Text 3 of 3 at the top of the text letting me know it was a long message.Last edited by Seven.07; 03-16-2010 at 04:13 PM.

I don't get MMS messages that are plain text. A lot of other phones don't either. Some phones will convert an MMS to a SMS, but if it's the case of no one replying to your messages, send an SMS. Bet you get a response back quickly.
Edit - My sister has an iPhone and when she types out a "War and Peace" sized novel, I get the 1 of 4 messages at the top. The next one will say 2 of 4 and so on. Problem is, sometimes I may get part 3 of her message first, then a bit later, get the other 3 messages, but not in order.Last edited by ColdSunshine; 03-16-2010 at 04:28 PM. Reason: More info.

So if u have a 5.0 OS or higher operating system, there's no way to text past 160 characters?

As ColdSunshine pointed out, SMS stands for Short Messaging Service. Some carriers support extensions that enable texting beyond 160 chars, but not all do on all platforms. It's not a function of your OS.

Strange how many people don't know that the first S in SMS stands for SHORT. On a side note, I think the teenagers have the right idea with their shorthand typing. I look at some of my 17 year old daughters messages and while they don't go over 160 characters, they contain 100-120 words somehow,

With OS 5.0 on my 8530 it shows the number of characters
that will be allowed. You will also notice it changes from
person to person sometimes, due to the receivers cell company
limiting the number of chars. per message.
Some are 110 per msg, some 120, some 160.
Remember, that includes spaces too.

I used to be a dispatcher many, many moons ago when "IM" speak was really popular. Some kid got sentenced to write a paper on how to drive safely as part of her community service for getting a ticket. I remember the judge ripping her a new one because this is the only line I remember from her paper.
"I'm like riding with my friendz and we're all talking and then we all have to remember that we're like in a car and we can totally kill someone."
And I know this chick graduated and probably still continues to write like that to this day. No wonder we will never catch up with India or China.God save us all. Go Sharks.

I can't believe when people say "Why can't I do this?" and you point them towards a third party application.
Then they say "Well...is there another way?" <-- which really means "I can't justify a three dollar purchase for the convenience, can someone give me a free way."
And THEN, when they find out there isn't a free way, you see the same person posting in a Rants & Raves forum a week later complaining about how all this stuff needs to be fixed, and nothing works properly out of the box. Ugh.
