Default Disable GPRS enable WI-FI?

Sorry if this is a re-post. Appears not to be......

I have just taken delivery of my new 8520. I bought it for its Internet, and more so, WI-FI capabilities. However I am due to go on holiday and due to the cost of getting data in a foreign country would like to totally disable the GPRS data, as not to incur a huge bill. I would however like to still be able to access internet, Via WI-Fi, when in a free wifi hotspot or something running off wifi (hotel internet at 1 euro a hour etc)

I have tried this at home on my home router with what I think is GPRS off, wifi enabled, and it informs me I need GPRS on to access WIFI. Being a coms engineer, I can’t understand in anyway shape or form how one is dependant on the other, being they are totally different protocols.

Any help on the matter is greatly appreciated and look forward to your help.

Cheers

Easy. Turn the network off, in Manage Connections.
No data will go through the carrier that way.

Oh, you'll loose phone abilities. No calls/SMS/MMS till you turn the network back on.

You should download Opera or BOLT. The OEM Browser is funky like that.

WiFi data still goes through your data plan. New BBs do BIS over WiFi. No way around it.

Not if you do as I said and turn the network connection off.
It can go to the carrier if you are not connected to the network.

diegonei, jackbox is correct in that a BIS connection can be established with WiFi only active.

How does that work? If that were true then there would be no point in wifi. So anything I download through wifi to my blackberry counts as using 3g?

When using BIS over WiFi you shouldn't get charged for roaming. Yes it still connects to BIS (BlackBerry Servers) but your cell company can't charge you for using their data, because your not using their data. Your connecting through a wifi hotspot to BIS. Now someone will probably say but I pay for BIS through my cellular company, yes, but I'm pretty sure your paying for BIS from BlackBerry. The cellular company gets a % of that for allowing you to connect to BIS on their network.
