Cricket BlackBerry Curve OS update.

So I just recently picked up a blackberry from my local cricket store (not quite old enough to get a contract plan yet so this is the best I can do.) and I was noticing how there are newer OS updates I can download but I was wondering if that would interfere with my mobile network or if it would still work fine.

Or is there really no point in updating the OS? I'm trying to resolve some of the small lag issues I get when sending out SMS to one specific contact.
