| | Coming from 8320 to 8520
I've had my 8520 for almost a week and i considered returning it for the 8900. After going into the store and playing with a live one & talking to friends who have it, I think I'm going to keep the 8520. I have a 8320 and I've had nothing but trouble with the trackball and my buttons getting dust into them. I love how this one has the buttons hidden (had a gel skin on 8320 eventually), love the mp3 controls on top of the phone, love trackpad. seems the only downside is the no cam flash. loved the cam on the 8320. RIM shouldve put a gps into it but my google maps is doing its thing again. |

I know there are 'experts' - or at least fans that will defend THEIR purchase - but this phone is better than the 8900 to me. I had one, and ended up giving it to my wife and keeping the 8520. The phone's faster, and the TrackPad is SO much better than the ball... after a couple of minutes messing around with it, it was second nature - very responsive. I do miss the superior camera that the 8900 had, but the wife is more of the phone-picture-taker than I will ever be. I'll take the faster phone. The 8900 and 8520 are more similar than they are different, so just go for your preference. You can't go wrong with either one, really... IMO.

Although both are excellent devices in their own right...the 8900 is a superior device....Will some people prefer the 8520 to the 8900? Sure, they have their own reasons (most likely the trackpad). But to say a phone lacking gps, a camera flash, or battery contacts for a dock is better than a device that has all the above....well thats just not accurate.

But to say a phone lacking gps, a camera flash, or battery contacts for a dock is better than a device that has all the above....well thats just not accurate. | I figured the "to me" and "IMO" (in my opinion) spoke for itself - evidently not. As I said, as an owner of BOTH phones (and an unlocked Bold still), the 8520 seems consistently faster when comparing the two. Same network, same area... the phone's faster. Maybe that's just for us... I found it odd, considering the 8900 has twice the RAM of the 8520. I would have liked to see them do a little more with the design, rather than the hybrid 'old meshes with new' thing they did, but ehhh... it works. Still pocket friendly. I could care less about a flash on a phone; the camera itself is probably more noticeable to my wife than I'd ever be able to see. I DID prefer the screen on the 8900, which was better than the Bold's to me as well. Both keyboards fall short of the Bold's bigger design, but I prefer both being a bit smaller and easier to handle. My work phone (HTC Touch Pro 2) trumps them all as far as typing goes, so for what they are, the keyboards are manageable - even for larger hands. GPS is another thing that I really don't care about - or ever use.
So again, for ME, a faster-performing phone, with ample memory and a trackpad replacing the ball that I've ALWAYS hated - will override a few added toys that I don't use anyway. So it's the better phone to me (my original statement). That's not to say that the 8900 isn't a wonderful phone. Maybe the 'best' overall that RIM offers. We'll see how that holds up when the 9700 comes out this way. *waiting* Whichever one you have or prefer, I say: enjoy! As long as it's not an iPhone, I don't care. lol

The Curve 8520 will be launched in my country this Saturday and I will be getting one soon. How's the display for an average user? I've seen reviews comparing it to the Curve 8900 and of course it makes the Curve 8520 look bad due to the side-by-side comparison of the lower resolution. Is the display good enough?

The display is like the 8300 series. It's very good. You will only notice the difference viewing pics and videos only. I don't think it make a big difference for messaging.

I just broke my new 8520 in. It is my first RAY GUN!! just kidding! but.. it IS my first BB. I waited to purchase a BB til I could get one that did not sacrifice functionality (subjective to me only) to get rid of the trackball. many of my co-workers are displeased with their BB (sorry still a newbie - don't know all the model numbers) because the balls get stuck and/or can become problematic. when I saw the 8520 at the t-mobile store, I immediately went to find out how much it would cost to break my Verizon contract. the track pad was genuinely the selling point for me. I know that other BB have enhanced features and honestly, the only thing I really wish that the 8520 had that it doesn't is GPS, but given that, I think it is both a fabulous value and a great phone in its own right.
now all I have to figure ot is how to slave it to my netbook to use it as a modem... *goes off to dig through wikihow's*
Take it easy folks!

Hello everyone. I got a new icon on my bb today that takes me to the 5.0 messenger upgrade. I have used the new bb messenger and dont like it very much. Do i have to upgrade? Can i stay with the old version? Is the old version going to be useless in the near future? Please advise. Thanks.

Been using the 8320 for 2 years, just move on to gemini a month ago coz the 8320 bricked out , so I need a bb fast, in the store they offer me a 8900 or 8520 ? Well tell u the truth its love at first sight with the gemini , its sleek, thin and all black badboy look, and the trackpad looks intresting after using it for a month I'm loving everyday of it , its fast and furious ! Never lags ! No more stupid annoying sandwatch ,my girl has a 8900 and I can compare it , and for me ? this is by far the bb of my dreams , no flash and 2.0 camera ? No probs ! Got my 8320 for 3 years and only took and has 2 pic in it hahahahahaha

I'm a new owner of a 8520 curve. The only problem i've had is, its quite problematic for a new owner to set it up! i've had my blackberry nearly a month now and still no idea how to setup my emails etc on it!

Question:
coming from the 8130 (and my first Berry), how much will I be in awe of the 8520? I'm considering it, handled a non-working version in the store, and kinda liked the form-factor and size. I REALLY liked the pearl for the size and didn't mind sure-type. Will the amazing OS, memory and touchpad be enough for me to learn to type on an itsy-bitsy QWERTY? I tend to use it mostly for web browsing and media. (no I don't need a Berry, I just like the extra organisational features and the slick OS. I can survive with a bare-bones dumb phone)
So.... really I guess I'm asking all things considered, would I be better served with the 8520 or the 8220 (reliability, durability, learning factor, ease of use, etc) Rogers currently has them for $49.99 and $9.99 respectively (with 3 yr contract)
