Default Blackberry 8530 Wifi Only

Hi, I recently got a new phone and I want to use my Curve 8530 as a wifi only device. I have gotten the device to connect to my wifi network at home, but it won't reach any outside websites.

I tried to ping msn.com and it would time out.

I tried pulling the battery, and no go. It looks like the device is connected to wifi. Diagnostic shows a signal and when I go to the connection screen, I see a green check next to my SSID.

Any thoughts on what could be the issue? Thanks guys!

what is BIS and how do I get it?

I don't understand why I need to restart the router. Everything else connected to the wifi works fine making me think it's an issue/setting on the blackberry.

Thank you for your help!

Blackberries require a BIS data plan to use the web. No if ands or buts around it.

I got my 8520 yesterday and I don't have BIS and my wifi works fine.

If you haven't messed around with with your router then I guess the problem is is the phone. Try this:

Menu > Options > Advanced Options > Browser > "Default browser configuration:" - Change to "Hotspot Browser".

Do you have a cellular connection? Have you activated your phone? I'm taking about a phone with no monthly data or voice plan using wifi only.

Thanks, this will save me a lot of useless searching.

On another note, does no one think that requiring someone to pay to use their own wifi at home is invasive? I should be able to use the device with wifi only if I choose to. I mean, I bought the device, and wifi is one of its features.

BB is different in this respect because everything runs through their "secure" servers and that why you need a BB data plan.

If you had say.. an android device, then you would have no problem connecting.

Except, this way your messages can't be read by the government.

I gotta say that if you do have BIS, the wifi will work even if you're out of network coverage, so for example I'm in Mexico right now, where my Virgin Mobile 8530 doesn't work, but the Wifi works fine.
