1) To use the phone on any other GSM carrier network
2) To avoid international roaming charges
3) Can increase the sale value of the phone.
All of this is moot however seeing as VZW is a CDMA carrier
and your model cannot be unlocked

you can't unlock... it is only for gsm phones so you can use any sim card in them....

yeah if your unlocked while in Europe you could have used a t-mo or any other local prepaid or pay as you go SIM
