Ok, so I am a BB newbie and just got a phone last week. It is supposed to be 3G - but it doesn't say it on the phone on the top right. Instead it says 1XEV...and I have no idea what that means.
Anyone want to offer a newbie some much needed help please?
sorry to be the messenger of bad news but if you have a bb 8330, its not a 3G phone. if you were sold on a data plan with that phone, i am afraid that you were taken for a ride.

There's a chart on this somewhere on BlackBerry's site, but 1XEV basically means you have 3G and are connected to BIS.

1XEV is the samme thing as 3G.. I have a Blackberry Storm and I have the same 1XEV if you download hybrids to your phone, I know with me if you're lucky you'll get the little 3G sign... But its really the same thing
I have a question though -- sometimes I'm in a verified 3G area, but my phone only connects at 1X. Any way to force it to connect at 1XEV? Sometimes I have to turn off data (or radio) and then re-enable it. Any other quicker way?

I believe that is the only way, other than power cycling your phone to make it reacquire the data signal.
