When I open my camera, I get a exclamation mark inside a circle that resembles a "sun-shape". It's located beside the number of remaining photos, along the bottom bar that also includes the zoom, and type of flash indicator.

Any ideas?

It means that the flash will go off when you take a picture.

Flash, you can just press SPACE to turn it on/off

Should be auto-white balance, not Flash. Flash should be a lightning bolt

It has to do with low light. Point your camera at the computer monitor and it should go away, then aim it towards the desk or keyboard and it may appear.
