After I upgraded my OS I noticed a bunch of applications that I don't remember seeing before. These are the apps in question,

    DOD Root Certificates
    TTY Support
    Blackberry S/MIME Support
    Blackberry MDS Runtime
    Blackberry Attachment Service

Now my question is what do these programs do and do I need them?

    BlackBerry Attachment Service

Required for viewing attachments in e-mail. Most of the time, you want this installed.

    BlackBerry MDS Runtime

If your device is not connected to BES and your IT department is not creating their own content, un-select it.

    DOD Root Certificates

    Department of Defence credentials.

    BlackBerry S/MIME Support

This is BES specific and related to higher levels of security.

    TTY

    Nope! Used for the deaf

PS: If you need more info read here on how to disable some of these if you wish
