wma files don't work very well or at all on blackberries. I've tried and sometimes they'll play audio and no video, or nothing at all.

Try converting the wma files to .3gp or mp4 keeping in mind the bitrate shouldn't be higher than about 500kb/sec or your BB will choke trying to play the file.

    8330 only supports .mp4 and .3gp video.
    320 X 240 pixels, 768 kbps, 24 fps.

I can't post the link to this on the blackberry.com website. Go there and search on supported media types to find it.
keep scrolling past the first set of Curves till you get to the specific 8330 entry.
For some reason the 8330 is limited compared to other Curves.

I have the 8330 and prior to OS 4.5 I could only play .3gp movies (.mp4 wouldn't work). After upgrading to 4.5 I can no longer play these same .3gp movies. I have recently discovered that .mp4 movies now play and .3gp do not. No idea why.
The message I get attempting to play .3gp is"
'An error has occurred attempting to play media'

I have always been on OS 4.5 from .77 and up and .3gp movies have always played for me. I haven't found the settings that will let me play mp4 or m4v files though.

I'm finding out thanks to others in these forums that the codecs supported in OS 4.3 were many more than those supported in OS 4.5. Seems backwards doesn't it?
According to Detman101 the following is true and so far I think this is panning out to be true:

As long as you are not running OS 4.5, you can use the following.

    3gp (AAC codec)
    3gp (H.263 codec)
    3gp (Mpeg4 codec)
    3gp (Divx codec)
    3G2 (Divx codec)
    3G2 (Mpeg4 codec)
    MP4 (Mpeg4 Codec)
    MP4 (Divx codec)
WMV (Older formats, newer ones won't play...I forget the version numbers)

However, if you are running OS 4.5 only the following work:

    3gp (Divx codec)
    3G2 (Divx codec)
    MP4 (Divx codec)

You could use a program called GSPOT to determine which codec is being used for your .mp4 file. It appears if it isn't the Divx codec it won't work.

As you can see, even though the video is a.3gp or .mp4 for a file type, it may or may not play depending on the codec used in it's creation.

I'll have to check but I'm almost certain that I didn't use the Divx codec to encode my .3gp files.

I just ran GSpot against a .3gp file that plays on OS 4.3 but not on OS 4.5.
It says the video codec is MPEG2 so add that to the list of 'supported in 4.3 but not 4.5.
I'm currently using Super to convert a small video .vob file to mp4 using codec Divx. I'll post the results shortly.

That worked! Very well in fact. Nice quality on the BB 8330 Curve!
Here's the settings I used with Super.

    Video
    Video Scale - 320:240
    Aspect - 4:3
    Frame/Sec - 23.976
    Bitrate kbps - 768
Options - Hi quality, Stretch it, 48K Audio

    Audio
    Sampling Freq - 44100
    Channels - 2
    Bitrate kbps - 128

You might play around with these settings to see if you can get better results.

I'll next try the same file to create a .3gp using a Divx codec ....

This also works as a .3gp file. Using the following settings.
Note: the original file size is 358,540 KB
converted to .mp4 it became 44,689 KB
converted to .3gp it became 54,538 KB

    Video
I could tell no difference in quality. The following Super settings were used:
    1. Output Container - 3gp/3p2 (Sony Ericsson)
    2. Output Video Codec - MPEG-4
    Video Scale - 320:240
    Aspect 4:3
    Frame/Sec 23:976
    Bitrate kbps - 768
Options - Hi Quality, 3gp v5 (I turned off Strech it from previous)

    Audio
    Sampling Freq - 22050 (previous was 44100)
    Channels - 2
    Bitrate kbps - 48 (128 previous)

    Forgot to mention.
GSpot now identifies this video as using mp4v code (MPEG-4 Video) even though it created a .3gp file as the result.

Barny, thanks for experimenting and posting what works. ;o)

You seem the perfect type of user to appreciate what Mediacoder is capable of. I have Super, but I don't use it, I use Mediacoder. Mediacoder can be daunting to a novice because of all the settings and codecs, container settings, etc. But for someone like you, I think you would appreciate its flexibility and power.

I guess my question is related enough so that I didn't have to start a new thread...

I use CloneDVDMobile to convert my movie files (usually to my iPod) but I can also use it to convert to the BB. I have an 8330 running 4.3 but the two options that the program gives me for BB conversion is either the 8800 or the Pearl. It does not list file types in that area. Does anyone know which would/might work on the 8330??? 8800 or Pearl??? I just got a new memory card and it has personally asked me to load some movies onto it!
