i updated the os and when the phone turned back on i got am email message and the notification mail box on the top screen. I checked my messages and instead of disappearing, the mailbox is still on the top saying i have 1 unread message. Help?

This has happened to me when I first upgraded from 4.2 to 4.5. It will eventually go away. In the mean time you can try a battery pull.

Did you try showing all icons?
