Pull the battery out, then use a q-tip with some alcohol on it to clean the ball, or you can go so far as to remove the bal and clean it.

Pry the chrome ring out with your fingernail, carefully, and the trackball will come out. Just note the orientation of the ball, and the ring, and you should be ok.

There is a thread on how to remove and clean the trackball. As I am new here, I can't post its URL (below 10 posts).

You can goto the main forum page, under "General BlackBerry Discussion" look for "Tips, How To & FAQ", there is a thread "How to remove and clean your trackball".

This happened to mine. No amount of cleaning helped. I got it replaced.
A stuck trackball is so annoying to deal with.

The trackball on mt 8800 also became a real pain to use.It became increasingly difficult for it to work when pressed down. This lasted about 2 months, then one day it became impossible to make the cursor move left to right.

Fortunately my Blackberry comes with my job, I just replaced it for a new one My "broken" one is being repaired via a specialist firm that offers repairs for corporate accounts on behalf of the carriers.

RIM got rid of the trackwheel to be able to build/offer slimmer devices.
I liked the trackwheel too, but a slimmer device more - and hey, the track-balll is pretty good.

Please help. I'm living in the Middle East, and I can't send my BlackBerry anywhere to be repaired. My trackball has been problematic from day one. I use the usually recommendations to fix it - hard press & roll in the stuck direction, or clean it with a brush. But neither solution is working anymore, and I'm afraid I will break it if I force it any more. I must get it unstuck, as it currently won't scroll down, and I can't access most of my apps. I'm desperate. Is there some "in case of emergency, break glass!" option? Thanks

It's not the ball, its the rollers.

Can any of you remember the old style PC mouse with a ball inside? It's just like that and dirty people would have a PC mouse that didn't work well. You would remove the mouse ball and then scrape huge amounts of gunk off the contact rollers using your fingernail.

Things have not changed. The BlackBerry trackball is exactly like that. Cleaning the ball is a waste of time. Remove the trackball assembly, remove the ball, and rub your dirty thick black rollers with your fingernail until you can see the lightly coloured plastic burried beneath your old sweaty finger-grime. You dirty buggers!

    j/k

Everyone is going to rub naturally occuring dust into the rubberised trackball and it will accumulate on the rollers. (I assume) you wash your hands to keep them clean, so clean the rollers too! If you don't force your BlackBerry to be hygeinic, you are going to be rubbing year-old finger **** back onto your fingers every time you use your BlackBerry!

Now I feel old! "Can any of you remember the old style PC mouse with a ball inside?"... Sad part is, there are probably plenty of users on here that have never touched one of those mice!

    1. Spray a decent amount any alcohol based deodorant on a flint free cotton cloth like a handkerchief or Napkin
    2. Hold the phone face down (To avoid the liquid from entering the phone and to let the debris onside get out)
    3. Wrap the sprayed part of the cloth around your index finger and gently press the trackball with the cotton cloth and roll it in all directions
    4. Spray more deodorant on the cloth if it gets dry and also press harder if it doesn't start rolling properly.

Works like a charm! Hope this helps!

Something to pay attention to if you are going to remove and clean your trackball are the four small rollers on the side of the trackball peice. Much like a computer mouse, the ball will collect dirt, and it will build up on these rollers, and eventually will prevent them from working properly. I take a knife and scrap those rollers clean whenever I clean my 8320 trackball, or any of my friends trackballs.
