Can someone tell me what the standby button is for. The ovbious explains but - - - Does it save battery power so if I call comes in the phone turns on? then back off?

That's pretty much it.
Standby puts the phone to sleep to conserve energy and you'll still receive calls and messages and it also locks the keyboard.

You will have to press the Mute/Standby after the call to put it back in Standby after taking the call.
There is an application you can buy called AutoStandby that will automatically put your BB in Standby after a predetermined time:
