i was pretty bummed when i noticed that my new phone couldnt access wifi. but i called up sprint and they said due to competition with the other phone services, they're working to add the wifi to the curve. any comments? when do you think that'll be?
(i dont want to pay for internet so wifi would be my way of accessing internet from my phone for free)
Nope, NO CDMA berries have WiFi yet. The 8330 has NO way to support WiFi, what they told you was wrong. The hardware simply doesnt exist in the device.
Even if you had wifi, you would still have to get a BB data plan. RIM requires all carriers that activate a BB to have one.
There have been past instances in which people have been able to drop the data plan, but the carriers are more strict now in meeting their agreement with RIM.
TMobile and Rogers have the 8320 (in North America)
Also, you can drop your data plan with ATT and TMobile... I actually started my BlackBerry with no data at all on TMobile... they literally do not require it at all
This does not help with your data but if you would like some extra talking minutes email Dan Hesse, Sprint's CEO ([email protected]) and ask him when sprint will get MMS. I did and got 30 free minutes!!!
You need to have a BB Data plan on your Sprint or Verizon 8330, even if it did have WiFi which it does not and will/can not. On CDMA carriers there is no reason to have WiFi, since you are required to have an Unlimited BB data plan through your carrier. Maybe WiFi would give you a faster connection in some areas, but it would mostly just eat battery life.
Nevertheless, the EVDO network is fast enough that you wouldnt even need WIFI. The processor of the blackberry would have to be faster to enjoy the faster speed of a WIFI connection. The connection that is on the network is definitely fast enough for this device.
I didn't really mind about not having WIFI on my Curve, b/c the browser itself isn't all that great, and on edge, its quite quick, in my opinion (depends on where you live.)

hmmm...does Dan give allow people to use him for SERO plans??
RIM does not require sprint BB users to have a data plan, I have a BB Curve from Sprint and am not req'd to have it, they try to push it on you but cannot MAKE you get it
i dont have wifi, but i dont feel like i need it, the plan i have is unlimited so no biggie to me. my phone is plenty fast.. its a PHONE its not gonna be faster than my laptop or pc but it does what it needs do to do.

Hmmm to my knowledge, Rogers has only the 8300 and/or 8310. There are no wifi BBs here in Canada.
