OK is there anyway that you can recover old sms messages from the media card? i have looked around it a little bit but was unable to find anything that stood out to be somewhere where those would be stored. If this is even possible I would appreciate the help.

sms messages are not automatically backed up to the media card..so, you're not gonna find them there if they're already deleted and gone.
