Default SMS Character Limit.

hey guys,

i just got a curve 8330 about 2 weeks ago, and noticed that i only have a 140 character limit to use for text messaging..

im just wondering if this is normal, cause i know many other curves or even blackberries in general have more characters to use in a text message?

Thanks alot for your help..

I think it depends on your carrier, but take a look at this.

You always can use MMS instead of SMS. MMS there is no char limit to my knowledge.

Does the feature above really change the text messaging too much? I'm not particularly a fan of that screen. :x (I'm a little picky, I know.)

Most CDMA carriers limit MMS to 1000 characters. It's important to remember, though, that not everyone can receive MMS on their devices.

To the OP, it's definitely a carrier limitation.

The length of an SMS (Short Message System) message is a technology limitation. It uses the same space used by the carriers to communicate with the cell towers and cannot be increased. This is the origin of the 160-character limitation. Some carriers offer "enhanced SMS" where longer messages are broken up into multiple messages but each message has only 160 characters. It's immutable :-)

And some carriers only allow 140 due to the way the packets are arranged.

You could purchase a program that allows for texting over 160 chars a message but I believe that this program will break the message up into several, like someone else said 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, 4/4.

I have never used this program however, so this is just what I have found from reading. The program Beyond160 is available here:
Beyond160 - Communication & Internet BlackBerry Software - BlackBerryApps Store It is not free but there is a trial.

Yeah, that's what was linked in post #2 (although the link was somewhat disguised).
