Retainer ring on trac ball

Put new trac ball in. Having trouble snapping in the retainer ring. Ring has 3 sets of prongs. Do they go side-side-bottom or side-side-top? Thanks in advance for your help. I don't want to force it and break it.

Think of it like a clock. They go at 9:00, 6:00 and 3:00
