    Socks are the things you put on your feet. HTTP is High Tensile Toilet Paper.

    SOCKS is the use of your carrier's network to find a way out to the Internet. HTTP uses the BIS/BES connection of the BB to find the same route out (similar to what all the other BB apps on your phone do to get out to the Internet).

    When the RIM network is down, you can still surf the web with OperaMini if it's set to SOCKS, because your carrier's network access still works and is not linked to the RIM NOC outages.

    NOC=Network Opperations Center.

    You know, when RIM has an outage because their one and only NOC that all RIM devices in the world depend upon to work is located in one place in Canada.
