No there are two different thins nothing will happen to your memory card, also you can take it off or copy you memory info in your computer

It wont affect your memory card, but i always take mine out when I do an update or upgrade. Its just safety thing...and Id rather be safe than sorry....but the 8330 is a pain to get the card in and out of, but worth the extra effort.

Just updated my OS (Curve 8330) left the memory card in and had no problems.

Some have had problems when changing devices and upgrading their os. The fix is usually save data to pc, reformat card and copy data back to card.
