This is definitely a newbie question. I purchased my Curve 8310 from AT&T last October, and it came with 4.2.2.170. Do I need to upgrade?

dont NEED too, but it is a very nice upgrade

It is not a bad idea to update. I have the same phone bought In late November with that OS. I have found more features with the 4.5 and the ability to have a larger micro card helpful. BTW I would definitely update to DM 4.6 as well.

Please make sure you are compfortable with the procedure pf upgrades though, you wouldn't want to nuke your Berry

Personally i would recommend updating to 4.5. I updated my 8330 from 4.3 to 4.5 and i couldnt be happier. Just be sure and comfortable with the process before you go ahead and do so. There are plenty of guides and videos to help you through the process and plus you have us here on the forums to help you out. Also you def want to update your DM also, I would go with 4.5 or 4.6. Dont go with 4.7 only because ive had members tell me their Curve wouldnt recognize with 4.7. But if you have any questions about anything feel free to PM or PIN me anytime.

Correct, DM 4.5 and 4.6 without media manager are the ones to have, preferably 4.6
