No, I was also able to do the same. It was after I changed anything on the card itself.

Put multiple new pictures on the card through Windows then try to access the card again. I had no issues with accessing the card as long as I didn't change anything that was on the card from when I updated the OS.

Could it possibly be the brand of card? I remember back in my palm days there were issues with certain makes/models of SD card.
FWIW I have a 512mb Lexar and have not run into issues on .37 or .44. This is on a cingular 8310.
What brand are you guys using?

Well, I have figured out the issue with the device freezing.

It's because the pictures on the media card were ranging in size from 1280x1024 to 1024x768. When the device first tried to render the thumbnails it would run out of memory and freeze.

I re-sized all of my pics down to 320x240 and everything is working as intended.

How did you re-size all of your pictures and what did you use?

Photoshop but you can use any photo editing program out there. If you can't boot the device with the media card in it then you'll have two options.

#1 - Get a microSD card reader and get the files off the card onto a PC and edit that way.

#2 - Roll your OS back to 4.2, get the pics off the media card and edit down then upgrade back to 4.5
