Default old lg flip phone sim works in BB 8300 with data ?!

I'm on AT&T. My Mom fried her 5 year old LG cell phone (not a smartphone). Until I get her a replacement, I stuck her lg sim into my old BB Curve 8300 to see if she'd at least be able to use the phone. Much to my surprise, the phone works and data works! My Mom is elderly and won't use data on the phone, but what will ATT do about this? Also, how is it possible that a sim from an LG non-smartphone can work in a BB, much less with active data? It's my family plan and I have data, but my Mom's acct doesn't. I'm really confused about this and a little worried.

SIM stands for "Subscriber Identity Module" IIRC, and that is the data it holds, the Subscribers identity, it was designed to be transferable from phone to phone, so it is no surprise that moving it from an old Dumbphone to a BB would work. Where you may hav an issue is that your Mom's SIM will report back to ATT that it is now in a BB and ATT could (and is withing thier rights to) add a data plan to your Mother's account.

Thank you. Yes, I'm aware of what a SIM is, but thank you.:-) What I didn't understand was how a SIM from a 5 year old dumb phone (no data) worked in a BB WITH data. I called AT&T. Had my Mom used just a little data (which is all you can do on Edge) AT&T wouldn't have even noticed. Still, I'm not interested in doing anything sneaky. I called them and asked if she could use the BB without data until I can locate a replacement phone for her. She's hard of hearing and has vision problems, so I have to personally try out the phones before I can buy one that will work. They were very kind. They said no problem and that if I decided to get her a smart phone for the larger screen, they would arrange for no data charges. At 84, my Mom doesn't do data. Really, they were very nice and quite helpful. I can't leave my Mom without a phone, so their willingness to help was a welcome thing to experience.

I'm going to check out the BB's and iPhones anyway to see if they're easy enough for her to use. It's all about screen size, keyboard size and volume/sound quality. I think they should design a phone for older folks to use. They're people too:-)
