I wanted to change my ringer tones and when I went into the "profiles" and clicked advance my sounds wouldnt play. I then left without changing anything but when I went to the Media Player everything wouldn't play, preinstalled or downloaded stuff - it didnt matter.

This happened to me once before so I new that I needed to reboot (so I pulled the battery) since simply turning it off wouldnt work.

Question is: why is this happening and what can I do about it without having to pull the battery??

If you are running 4.5.0.175, there seems to be problems with the profiles/ringtones/media player files in this build. Some people have had success replacing their profile.cod files and mediaplayer .cod files with the equivalents from another stable version.
