i have a crosshair icon on my home screen on my 8330. what does that mean

That is the GPS icon.

That's the symbol for the internal GPS. The cross-hair by itself corresponds to "OFF." The crosshair with a dot and two curved lines (representing radio waves) adjacent to it corresponds to "ON." You control the On/Off state by Options / Advanced Options / GPS / GPS Services
