    I seem to have to stand on the letter U, or hit it again to get it on the screen from day one.

    It sounds like you have a defective keyboard. Not the plastic thing that you press but the part of the keyboard underneath on the main board.

    I suggest that you take the phone back to the store and ask for a replacemnet phone.
