keyboard and trackball won't light up-Help!

I have looked thru the other threads here regarding this problem and they just keep saying that it has something to do with the auto dimming feature being of/off. That doesn't seem to have any effect. I can go into a dark room with auto dimming on or off and the keyboard or trackball will not light up.
When i pop the battery out and replace it, trackball and keyboard stays lit for about 1 minute (getting my hopes up) then it goes off, and when i try and use them nothing lights up.
Thanks in advance for any answers or steering me in the right direction.

Don't use your phone in the dark. Its bad for your eyes. beyond that, how old is it? Still a warranty thing?

i know, in the dark is bad, but.........sometimes ya just gotta.
how long is the warranty? Phone is coming up on about 11 months old now.
