Default "IP Address no longer valid"??

I am having trouble logging in to my University Campus wifi on my curve. It was working fine yesterday but I haven't been able to sign in all day today, and when i check the status under the wi-fi diagnostic, it says "IP Address no longer valid".
how is this possible? what does that mean?

Have you tried a battery pull?

    Try deleting and reconnecting again.

When you connect to a DNS server, you are assigned an IP address. If you release the address, it becomes part of the available pool and will go to somebody else next time.

I have tried both a battery pull and a deleting the profile, neither has worked. when i try to reconnect i get : Unable to connect reason: W002: Wi-Fi Connection failed
    this is ridiculous

    Humm....

There is a Site Survey tool under Manage Connections > Wi-Fi Options > Wi-Fi Diagnostics > Site Survey.

That will show you the local sources and signal strength. I can successfully connect with a signal strength of -80 dB, but at lower signals, it fails.

Something else to check. View/Edit your Wi-Fi profile and verify "Allow inter-access point handover" has been enabled. This will allow an automatic hand over to the strongest signal within the network.

Does the wifi connection have a capture portal where you need to login first?

Have you checked with the operator of the hot spot to see if they are having any problems?

Facing the same problem for the past two days. Finally got it to work. Turned out to be a real simple solution:

Settings -> Mobile Network -> Data Services -> On.

Frankly this does not make sesne at all since I did not subscribe to data service from ATT. To make sure this is really wi-fi:

    1) I turned off "Mobile Network" and leave only wi-fi on - still working.
    2) Turned wi-fi off as well, no longer able to browse.

    Before doing this, I tried:

    1) Reset Bold.
    2) Reset my router.
    3) Tried 5 different hotspots.
    4) Tried manually provide an IP.
    5) Make my router an open network.
    6) Restart Bold
    7) Update router firmware
    ...

None of these is the issue but the "Data Services". Hopefully this solves your problem.

Thanks. This worked for me too. Spent many hours trying to figure it out. My router logs showed that an IP address was assigned to my Blackberry but I always received "IP Address no longer valid" until I turned on Mobile Network -> Data Services while Mobile Network is disabled.

Doesn't make sense to me why the Mobile Network Data Services setting needs to be ON when Mobile Network is disabled. But WiFi works now.

Smile Wifi ON without a data plan on Bold 9700

After much to-do, I found that Wiggler was correct.
I have the Wifi working without the data plan.

I needed to access "Mobile Network" configuration in Settings and set "Data Services" and "While Roaming" to ON. (This is somewhat anti-intuitive since it appears that you are explicitly accepting the usage of a blackberry or phone company's data plan -- not true.)

It was once I made those changes above, that the phone was able to assign an IP address from my home router. (Before such time, the phone showed me indeed connected to the router, but it didn't actually assign an IP address.)

After I set the default browser "Hotspot Browser" in the "Browser Configuration" menu, I was pretty much set.

It's worth noting that the WiFi icon in the upper right hand corner is STILL gray, opposed to white as some others have claimed. (It turns white if you are actually using a data plan.)

    Hope this helps someone.

I am having the same issue since this morning...

when trying to connect via wifi I get "IP address no longer valid" when I look at the logs on my router ( which worked fine before ) I see that it wants to give a valid IP that is free to the Blackberry.

I tried all of the tips mentioned above and still didnt get anywhere.

    any help is appreciated

IP addresses are actually assigned by a DHCP server when your device connects to the network. DNS servers can only be contacted after your system has an IP address.

I dunno about you guys but this gave me a huge phone bill... for some reason, it was still using the phone's data plan (which I had explicitly requested the carrier to disable but the idiots did not). I had to wrangle for weeks convincing them that I had never wanted the data plan and I thought I was using wifi and it's the phone's fault.

Gonna go see RIM about this and figure out what the ****'s happening

    Thumbs up Thank you!

THANK YOU. I'm begining to believe that RIM doesn't want WiFi to work at all, to help out their telecom buyers After three days hunting for this solution, this might just get me going again...

Default Blackberry is friends with my service provider !!

this is bullsh*t !! if i keep my data services (UNDER THE MOBILE NEtWORK OPTIONS.. Mind You !!) off, my wifi doesn't work... if i do keep it on, wifi works flawlessly BUT ! i am also susceptible to data charges when not in a wifi zone ! i want to be able to use internet only over wifi and not my service provider's 2G,3G data... is there a more plausible solution to this ?
