Pish-Posh! No question is dumb!
To highlight text, simply hold down the 'shift' key - the one like [^aA] - and move your trackball over the text. Then click the Menu key and select Copy.

Not at all, Copy and Paste is one huge advantage BlackBerry has over iPhone, everybody should know about it.
BlackBerry is multitasking and maintains a clipboard.
A typical case might be quoting source material from a web site. Using Browser, Menu / Select Mode. This will let you choose what to copy, use the Shift key to start and the trackball to hilight selected text or an image.
Menu / Copy places your selection on the clipboard.
If you are going to quote the text, open a reply window in a suitable site, like the CrackBerry.com WAP Homepage and choose Menu / Paste.
The contents of the clipboard are transfered to your reply. - 06-19-2008, 08:55 PM #5

The problem you are having with the clipboard is normal, that is how copy and paste works. (you copy something and can paste over, over, over... until something else gets copied)
I am not sure why it is coming up when you hit the trackball... it should be available under the Menu Key
I am surprised nobody mentioned this, but there is a shortcut for copy / paste as well...
1) Hit Shift to go into selection mode... (the full blue selection cursor turns into a smaller blue dot) and then scroll the trackball to select desired text
Here is where the shortcuts come in...
2) Press Alt - Select (trackball) to copy
3) Press Shift - Select (trackball) to paste
makes things a litte faster... no Menu > Copy blah blah

I am a BB newbie and glad to find most of my beginners question somewhere around CrackBerry - what a great community. Copy/Paste was a BIG no-no on my iPhone but now - it's so cool being able to do all that convenient things like copy and past text snippets wherever I want - thanks for that tip

I don't know if this is OS specific, but you can use the built in memory cleaner to clear the clipboard. Go to options>security options>advanced security options then memory cleaning. To make it even faster you can make a shortcut icon for the homescreen. Really helpful tool.
