I was updating the OS on a friends At&t curve when a fatal error occurred. now it's a lovely paper weight... DM 4.6 isn't even recognizing it. Now I did the same OS update 5 minutes prior on another friends vzw curve and it took just fine, up to 4.5.0.131... I have a backup pre-error of her at&t phone... any clues on how to fix this? I've went down several avenues before coming on here. A big preemptive thanks guys and gals for any help.

OK back to basics... in the manual app loader its giving me a syntax error on line two error message... and advising me that the phone has no desktop software for the device. I'm running DM 4.7 without media manager. Never had this issue before. Is it that this device is an older 1st gen At&t? ( I don't think so but at this point who knows )

you definately should uninstall the 4.7 and reinstall 4.6 from blackberry.com . 4.7 is very finicky with curves, and is really only for the newer phones(bold,8900,storm)

I'm on that now... yeah even with the manual approach it's still giving me the fatal error and not acknowledging her device as having software...

Ps: the device isn't in loop mode, it's a black screen with a steady red led.

PS: same issue with 4.6... And manual apploader is a no go.

Ohh and btw, the back up is a loader backup file in .ipd format...

Step #2: We need to connect the BlackBerry to the Computer via USB cable. But here's where the tricky part comes in with the Nuked BlackBerry. Do you see in the image above where it says COM1? What we want to do is plug in the BlackBerry, and when COM1 switches to say USB-PIN:UNKNOWN we immediately click Next. This catches the BlackBerry and takes it out of the constant reboot cycle and allows you to then reload the Operating System.

Tip: The USB-PIN:UNKNOWN option will display for a few seconds when the BlackBerry is first connected/flashing its LED in red. With a Nuked BlackBerry, That occurs when the device is in the initial start-up part of it's reboot sequence.
    did you follow that?

    explicitly...

The device was having some issues prior to this event. From what I can tell the fatal error occurred just post apploader backup. It was an original at&t OS from when they first carried the curve. Shouldn't make a difference though.

Some have success using CrackMem to load the OS on a dead/nuked BB:

I have that, never thought of that... I'll give it a go.

BTW, thank you again for all the input. I feel like a total newb with this issue, meanwhile I've upgraded/downgraded/upgraded my OS on all my BB's sans issues. live and learn.
