i plugged in my blackberry to my pc for updates but its been stuck for 30 minutes in the backup progress and database: BBGroups screen and on the screen of the phone a little clock between a computer and a phone is practically permanent. should i wait or should i cancel the updates ?

Well give it a little longer it should ideally not take such a long time but disconnecting may cause database corruption. Wait for 45 mins and if device is still unresponsive then we need to pull the plug.

What kind of updates? If its an OS update it could take close to an hour and unplugging it will be very bad juju.
