GSM with four bars

Even though my ATT service on my phone shows 3 or 4 bars, my Curve switches to GSM and I don't have a data connection. I just have to move around the house until it goes back to EDGE. What gives? This problem started about two weeks ago. I suspect that ATT lost a tower or changed something.
