when i close the app, but roll over it, it shows the number of new emails i have. how does it know this if it's closed properly? is it always running, and is there a way to change this? or is it not running in the background when i close it correctly.

It displays the number of unread messages. You can read the unread messages then Exit out of the application to get rid of that number.
