How good is the firewall that comes built in on my bb? Does it do a good job of protecting the device?

I'd have to say yes. I don't have any personal experience, but I haven't read any stories about a BB being hacked either.

The firewall on your BB does not work the way the one on your
computer does. This may be different on BES (corporate)

It is designed to block incoming SMS, MMS, BBM and internet service.

I have never enabled mine on and have never had an issue

So it wouldn't hurt to turn it off??? (I have BIS)

No, it won't. Again I have never enabled that on either the Pearl or the Curve.
There was also a thread a while back on this and if I recall correctly (always
questionable at best) the consensus view was leave it disabled.

i disabled mine yesterday after failed trying to get some file because of the firewall is on. and now is good!!
