I'm giving my 8330 to a friend, and he asked me to downgrade to from OS5 to OS4.6 for him as it will free up more memory. Will downgrading the OS automatically erase all my contacts/messages/settings on the phone, or do I have to manually do that myself? And does anyone remember how much memory a clean 4.6 with no apps takes up?

If you downgrade all of the info stored on the blackberry will be lost automatically. This is because of the way that downgrading has to be done. BDM wont backup any of this data.

I don't think there ever was an OS 4.6 for the 8330. It jumped from OS 4.5 to OS 5.0. Downgrading will remove your data as lmftmf states, but you can certainly back it up and restore it if you need to. His statement that BlackBerry Desktop Manager won't backup the data is incorrect.

An 8330 is a 96MB device. With a barebones OS and no apps, it should have at least 50-60 MB free. But that's just an estimate.

The software up/down-date had an error message when installing. Now the phone won't boot up, it just shows the hourglass spinning endlessly. I'm going to try to downgrade to the lower one and see what happens.
