Do I need to have Blackberry S/MIME Support or MDS Runtime on my 8320? I'm on BIS and read something about one of these applications only pertaining to BES. I wasn't sure if I needed these so I checked them when I was installing OS 4.3. Don't want un-needed applications wasting memory.

Unsure, but "MDS Runtime" sounds like it's needed.... Do they take up that much room?

They take up a substantial amount of space and are only needed for BES supported applications. You save nearly 800Kb by removing them.

Removing them is part of John Clark's memory tuning advise.

Unless S/Mime = Foreign Characters and Font, it shouldn't be deleted as I did not see it in John Clark's: Optimize your BB! How To Setup for max free memory!.

You are correct, I missed that reference.

S/MIME is part of the security and encription package.

I'm not on BES and don't deal with encryption except at work but I work for the Gov and that is a whole other Blackberry world.

You could always do a backup, delete, and see what happens......

I can vouch that deleting MDS Runtime, will not disrupt sercive or corrupt applications on the BB. I followed John.C guideline and wiped out as much as I could that was instructed by him. I aslo own a 8820 from work, and it is was too restrictive with IT policies up the a$$ etc. As the curve is for personal use, I do what ever i can for it to perform to my liking.

You can delete S/Mime from your BB. It is used for encrypting and decrypting emails.
