Unhappy curve worth it?

not sure if this is the correct section, but here it goes (if it isnt, please let me know or move it to the correct part of this site):

i bought a curve as a complete n00b and the guy i bought it from (dealer, but not a tmobile store) kinda withheld some information and didnt mention the data plan that was required (well he did, but he said i would get wifi without it, which i do, and that wifi was all that was needed to check email and use apps etc. and that the data plan was for business use). well i started wondering why nothing worked and was recommended to this site and realized i got shafted a little.

now ive seen a few iphones and my buddy knows how to unlock them and im debating getting one of those instead. i love the blackberry but i dont want the extra 20 dollar data plan to pay just to be able to use it (although i REALLY want the gps). plus the iphone can download apps for free and i have to pay for them?

anyway, the iphone will have the same issue though right? ill need the data plan to view maps/email/etc.? i love the curve for texting and set up, but i feel i payed a lot of money for somethin my old rizr can do..

maybe i just havnt taken full advantage of the non-data plan capabilities, and if so someone point me in the right direction.

iono.. lots of ranting but i dont know what to do. any input for a n00b is greatly appreciated..

you need a data plan for any smart phone. What is $20 or $30 a month? Just don't go out once a month.

Buying a Blackberry without a data plan is like buying a gun without bullets. The unlocking of the iphone is terribly simple anymore. No carrier but At&T will allow service on any iphone - unlocked or not. If you need to do the same thing you did on your Razr and nothing more. I would suggest going back to the Razr because a blackberry is an expensive device.

Thre are unlimited apps and games for the blackberry (well limited to where they're stored) Some you need to buy - some are free.

If I understand correctly, your dealer tried to sell you on the data plan and perhaps mentioned H@H service.

You have had a chance to see how useful it can be with just a Wifi Browser, but there is no getting away from the fact, BlackBerrys are built on a data plan.

iPhones are not, but all they are good for is Browsing and showing off videos. There is no professional grade communications software for them.

well with all due respect im a high school senior about to move to a new city for college.. i dont view myself very "professional" at the moment, although i do plan to pursue a degree in engineering.

dealer didnt try to sell me anything but the phone! he was like "its because theres no service (just pulled it out of the box to show me), once you hook it up to your sim card and get service on it those programs will work"

im now stuck in another 2 year contract so ill have to keep this phone. maybe a new skin will make me feel better. i just downloaded the iberry one and somehow it came with tigerfish on the background

how would yall rate the media center on the curve? i might get the data in the future, but as for right now all i can do is personalize it (and buy a separate gps ) lol

Any smartphone requires a data plan to get the most out of it. You will need to pay for the iphone too. If you go ATT you'll pay sixty dollars minimum. Otherwise you need to unlock.

There are many BB apps that are free. There are no apps on iPhone right now without unlocking your phone and when the SDK and apps yield results you can be sure you'll pay for many of those.

like i said my buddy can unlock it for me.

to edit my previous statement, there are some cool apps out for the blackberry, i wasnt looking in the right places. i researched and found a few other sites.

i do agree though that over half of these apps cant be used without the data package

it sounds like you dont really want to keep the curve! Haha, but if you can, i highly suggest getting the data plan because you will love it. The data plan is what turns a Blackberry into a Crackberry.

Default Get Google Maps (it's free)

If you want to have GPS-like functions, when you get a data plan, you'll be able to download Google Maps for free on your BlackBerry. It will let you get directions without having any internal GPS because it uses cell phone tower triangulation to recognize where you are at and to create directions for you. It's pretty cool and might be enticing enough a reason to add a data plan if you really want GPS functionality on your new phone.

Welcome to the BlackBerry world!

BB without data is big-time constrained, but it's still an outstanding phone/text device, albeit expensive. There are lots of thoughtful and innovative little things about it that make simple phone calls and text messaging more practical.

iPhone plans on AT&T I think have data included, but the monthly rates are higher because of that. So either way, you're going to pay extra for data no matter which phone you use. I don't know what the iPhone extra costs are, but ulimited BB data on AT&T is $30, not $60 like someone else suggested.

To answer your earlier question about bluetooth, besides the obvious use of headsets (a must-have), you can wirelessly transfer files, ringtones, pictures, music, contact information, etc. with other bluetooth-enabled devices. It's just a convenient way of moving data without having to plug in.

While I believe Google Maps does a nice job, can it really be trusted to give directions with cell triangulation. Correct me if I'm wrong but triangulation can be as far off as 1500 yards (meters? can't remember) which is not practical for GPS replacement.
