I just got a BB Curve 8300 and cannot make calls, only emergency calls. I checked the help menu and it said to go into options and check that calls aren't blocked but there is no item blocked calls in the option menu.
I receive messages but not calls and can't make them.

It sounds like the 8300 isn't properly activated on your account. Take it back to the store where you bought it, or if you bought it used, contact Telstra customer service and make sure the phone is activated on your account.

So Jeff, it isn't a case of just putting in a sim card and using the phone? Does every phone have to be activated by the phone company?

Since I've never used a GSM BlackBerry, I can't say for sure. My suggestion was based on his statement that his phone wasn't working. Since the OP didn't mention a SIM, you may have identified his problem.
