I have a Blackberry 8330 Curve that is not activated with a carrier. I was just curious as to whether there is any way to use it as a gps device without
    activating it.

It should work. Why not turn it on and try?

I was give an 8330 which charged right up and seems to work fine. I will not be activating it as we all have TMobile. I'd still like to use it for GPS. The GPS help says I can select things that aren't there, such as "refresh GPS" to get my current lat/long. There are no maps installed, so can't test that way. I will try tethering to my laptop with a couple of map programs and see what happens, but any ideas would be welcomed, such as what map programs are available. Thanks

The GPS will work, its a seperate "chip" but the maps have to be downloaded from the carrier I believe. So although the phone will know where you are, it'll just show you on a blank page.
