According to Blackberry, my device is listed as OS 5 compatible:
BlackBerry - Device Software v5.0 - Download BlackBerry Device Software Today

BlackBerry Device Software v5.0 supports the following smartphones:

    BlackBerry Curve™ 8330 smartphone
    BlackBerry Curve™ 8350i smartphone
    BlackBerry Curve™ 8520 smartphone
    BlackBerry Curve™ 8530 smartphone
    BlackBerry Curve™ 8900 smartphone
    BlackBerry Storm™ 9530 smartphone
    BlackBerry Storm2™ 9550 smartphone
    BlackBerry Tour™ 9630 smartphone
    BlackBerry Bold™ 9000 smartphone
    BlackBerry Bold™ 9650 smartphone
    BlackBerry Bold™ 9700 smartphone
So, does this mean it's safe to download and install and no issues on Sprint? (I know this sounds like a stupid question but I check into this site semi-frequently and have never seen any news that Blackberry has released OS 5 for the 8330 phone).

And if I can install it, are there compelling reasons to do so or are the changes just minor?

As long as you have the 8330 and not the 8330m, you can download and install the 5.0 device OS to that device. Be aware that it will likely slow the device down significantly because of the size of the OS. But OS 5.0 is significantly better than OS 4.5, in my opinion.
