Next to all of the numbers in my call log, there is a (W). I am sure it is related to the fact that when calling someone in my address book, the word "work" shows up below the number.

Where can I get rid of the "work" designation and what does the (W) mean?

You got it . The "w" stands for work. Just like if you call a mobile number from your address book you get an "m" and if you call a home number you get "h".

When you save a number to a contact the default normally is to save it to work number, remember the Blackberry was initially a corporate device. You can easily edit a contact details by going to your address book , search the person and press menu and then edit. For example if you have someone's cell number showing up under work number just cut and paste it to mobile. Hope that helps.
