IM new here but im fast learning that memory seems to be a big part of this unexpected phenomena. Apparently when your memory gets low the phone starts deleting stuff on it's own to makee more room. I had the same issue and the CS people for my carrier helped me clean things up until I could get a media card and start putting all my big files like photos and stuff there.
Its still deleting my sent messages though and im not sure what THAT's about.

Here is everything you both need to know, and the procedure to follow to fix it.

What you are describing is typical of low memory problems. Any time File Free drops below 10 000 000 the phone will start deleting call logs and text messages without warning or prompting, to free up memory. Text messages may be deleted as soon as they arrive. A battery pull recovers some memory and will alleviate the problem temporarily. The solution is to remove stuff you don't need (sample video, wallpaper, themes, languages, brickbreaker, etc.) from memory. This procedure developed by Stoner will help you.

Also, if you have a media card, be sure you put pictures, music, and ringtones on it, not in your device's memory. Keep in mind, though, that media card memory isn't device memory. You have to keep your device memory well above 10 000 000, regardless of how big your media card or how much free space it has.
