Boss is tracking me ???
Hi,
My first post here. I thought that title might get some views
I have an 8310 and GPS is working, that is I can go to advanced-GPS-refresh GPS and it gives coordinates.
But My question is how can I tell if my employer is tracking me ?
What should I be looking for ?
And of course I can't just go to him and ask, he wouldn't admit it if they do have the capability to track us.
Thanks for any advice on this,

You can't tell, that is why it's best to not play around if you're on BES. They can track everything, BlackBerry Messenger, SMS, e-mails, etc. My BES guy saves information for two years on the BES servers...

There is no way from the phone to tell if you're being tracked. But just because the ability is there if you're on a BES, doesn't mean it's being done. If you're on a BES and you're friendly with your IT department, ask them.

Wow, now that's some fast replies ! Thanks.
I have to ask, what is BES ? I haven't search for yet, obviously.
Thanks again,

The only thing that cannot be tracked (including your location via GPS) is MMS. I just block this on my server.

So it looks like BES is "Blackberry Exchange Server". Is there any way to find out if your company has this ? The IT guy is new and not a source of information.
I'm not a slacker or anything, I'd just like to know about this.
Thx,

BlackBerry Enterprise Server, not Exchange
Go to Options...Advanced Options...Enterprise Activation. If it's on a BES, you should see an activation date.Last edited by Max69; 02-03-2009 at 01:40 PM.

If work gave it to you, assume you are being tracked and behave accordingly. I drive OTR and like many companies, have a Qualcomm terminal in the truck. Not only my employer, but also the shipper and the customer, can see my exact location at any point.
If the capability is there, expect it's being used whether it's acknowledged or denied.

type it in the email field of options > advanced options > Enterprise activation . Works on all devices (havent tested Storm) that I have tried.
On the storm you might have to type the equivalent 9,6/ (which is what you will get if you HOLD alt while typing CNFG)~S_A - 02-03-2009, 02:08 PM #16Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused.

make friends with the SysAdmin running your BES server. Even if they're not a wealth of info they're great at making things work. If you feel your being tracked and that paraniod, turn off the GPS features and buy a Garmin / TomTom for your car. It's also nice to have the Sysadmin on your side to tweak Security Policies that otherwise might restrict some of the cool things you can do on your BlackBerry.
Also, Awesome tip with the Alt > CNFG -

Turning off your GPS could get you in trouble. Just do what you are supposed to do and you won't get in trouble.

Oh man ! I gotta do what I'm supposed to now ? J/K

Right, turning it off wouldn't be good, besides, I plan to try out Instamapper.
Thanks for all the info and help, I'll check the Enterprise Activation menu out.
It's not that I'm paranoid, I'm just curious to know.

Okay, on my BB under Enterprise Activation it says
Email: (blank)
Password: (blank)
PIN: (some numbers there)
Status: Not Activated
Also did the alt + CNFG and it says "PIM Synchronization is not enabled on this device"
Is it therefor safe to assume the boss isn't tracking me ? - 02-03-2009, 08:25 PM #23
Yes, you are not on the BES. Your boss cannot track you via the server.
