can anyone tell me if there is free download original software for the 8310?
I have been able to download the update for the blackberry device manager but I am trying to update some ringtones and it says i don't have that component and need the original CD which I don't have.

You can download the latest OS for the 8310 from RIM, here: BlackBerry Desktop and Device Software Download Sites. You probably won't be able to find the original OS, so you'll need to update your phone's OS to the latest version. The Upgrade / Downgrade procedure in my signature will tell you how.
