Set your convienience key to "application list" that's what I have

Well yeah but you go straight there no matter what you're doing. As opposed to having to backout of what you're doing and hitting menu..

Yes, but once again..you would have to press end then menu. Your question was asking how to access the application list with one keystroke. That is the only possible way..

FWIW I set my left convenience key to "change application." I find it useful when multitasking.

You want an actual list instead of icons. Damned if I know, but that would come in handy.
