Im not sure whats happened, but i used to be able to hold down the alt button and press other buttons to get their alternative character up. Now i have to press the ALT button for every character. The same applies with the CAPS button.
I've never been able to do that with the caps button, I have to hold it down to do all caps but my alt keys works as you described, have you tried pulling your battery out?
